What is a Google Place ID?
A Place ID is the text code Google uses to identify one place, such as a business listing on Google Maps. Most business Place IDs start with ChIJ, for example ChIJN1t_tDeuEmsRUsoyG83frY4. Google says the length can vary and there is no maximum, so copy the whole thing.
Review tools, booking apps, website plugins and the Google Maps APIs ask for it, because it points to your exact listing even when other businesses have a similar name.
How to find your Place ID
- Type the business name and city in the box above.
- Pick the business from the list. Check the address under the name.
- Copy the Place ID. You also get the review link and a QR code built from it.
Already have a Google Maps link? Choose "Paste it instead" and paste it. This tool reads the Place ID from the link when it is there, and looks the place up when it is not. That makes it a quick Place ID lookup for a link a customer or a client sent you.
Other ways to look up a Place ID
| Way | What you need | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| This tool | The business name and city, or a Maps link | Owners, agencies and anyone who needs one ID fast |
| Google's Place ID finder | A browser. It is a map on Google's developer docs page | Checking a pin on the map, one place at a time |
| Places API Text Search | A Google Cloud project, an API key and billing turned on | Developers looking up many places from code |
Google's own Place ID finder sits on its Places API docs page. You search, click the place and read the ID off the map. It looks up one place at a time.
For code, Google's docs say to send a Text Search (New) request with the field mask set to places.id. That returns only the IDs and is billed under its own IDs-only SKU, so check Google's Maps pricing page before you run it on a big list. If you only need a handful of IDs, this page is faster than setting up a key.
What you can do with a Place ID
- Make a review link:
https://search.google.com/local/writereview?placeid=plus your Place ID opens the review box. The review link generator builds it for you. - Show your reviews or rating on your website: most review widgets ask for the Place ID.
- Connect apps: booking, reputation and reporting tools use it to find your listing.
- Build with the Google Maps APIs: Place Details and other Places API calls take the Place ID.
- Print a review QR code: the QR code tool turns the same ID into cards and a counter sign.
Can a Place ID change?
Yes, sometimes. Google's developer documentation says Place IDs can change over time when Google updates its Maps data. Google recommends refreshing stored Place IDs that are more than 12 months old. If a review link or widget suddenly shows the wrong place or an error, look up the Place ID again here.
For developers: when an API call answers NOT_FOUND for a Place ID, Google says the ID is obsolete. Look the place up again by name and save the new ID.
Can you save Place IDs?
Yes. Google's Maps terms limit how long you can keep most Maps data, but its Place ID page says Place IDs are exempt from those caching limits. So you can store them in your CRM, your website settings or a spreadsheet and use them later. Just refresh them now and then, as above.
Place ID, CID and review link
| What | Looks like | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| Place ID | ChIJN1t_tDeuEmsRUsoyG83frY4 | Google's APIs, review links, most apps and plugins |
| CID (customer ID) | A long number, like 10281119596374313554 | Older Google Maps links (maps.google.com/?cid=) |
| Review link | search.google.com/local/writereview?placeid=... or g.page/r/.../review | Asking customers for a review |
Running a home service business and looking up your own ID? The Place ID is the easy part. Getting found in Maps and turning those calls into booked jobs is the hard part. Our guide on how to rank in Google Maps covers that.
Questions owners ask
What does a Google Place ID look like?
Most business Place IDs start with ChIJ and are made of letters, numbers, dashes and underscores, for example ChIJN1t_tDeuEmsRUsoyG83frY4. Google says the length can vary, so copy the whole ID.
Do I need a Google API key to find a Place ID?
Not with this tool. Search by name or paste a Maps link and copy the ID. You only need your own key to call the Google Maps APIs from your own code.
Is a Place ID the same as a CID?
No. The CID is a long number used in older Google Maps links. The Place ID is the text ID used by Google's APIs, review links and most apps.
Can a Place ID change?
Sometimes. Google says Place IDs can change over time and suggests refreshing ones older than 12 months. If a widget or review link stops working, look the ID up again.
How do I turn a Place ID into a review link?
Add it to the end of https://search.google.com/local/writereview?placeid= or let this tool build the link and a QR code for you.
Can I look up a business I do not own?
Yes. Place IDs are public, so you can look up any business listed on Google.
Can I store Place IDs in my own system?
Yes. Google says Place IDs are exempt from the caching limits in its Maps terms, so you can save them and use them later. Refresh ones older than 12 months.
